Facing-tiles; slabs; enamels; enamalling.-Glass, metal, eartehnware, or like tiles, slabs, or plates for floors, ceilings, walls, baths, tanks, &c. are pitted or roughened to key with the cement by applying enamel containing sawdust or combustible material to the backs of the tiles &c. On firing the article, the sawdust is burnt, and the enamel fixed. The faces of the plates &c. may be decorated by coloured enamels, or the backs of glass plates may be ornamented by coloured enamels and cements to produce mottled or marbled effects. In applying the invention to glass or earthenware articles, the combustible material may be pressed into the soft glass or clay during the moulding operation. The combustible material may be in the form of coarse canvas, which may be applied with, or without, a filling of enamel. The plates may be flat or curved, and are capable of resisting atmospheric and chemical action.
