Breaking and scutching apparatus.-In order that the stems may be treated uniformly throughout their length, they are passed twice through the machine, one half of the width of the machine being used for the first passage and the other for the second passage of the stems. They are fed along a trough H to pairs of feeding and crushing rollers F, and are scutched by pairs of rapidlyrotating scutching-rollers D, on leaving which they are deflected downwards by a plate S in the manner shown, and are transferred by hand, or by suitable automatic means, to an overhead travelling apron I, which extends over the second half of the machine and transfers the stems with their scutched ends foremost to the feed end of the machine, where they drop on to a feed-apron and are automatically passed again through the machine, being finally delivered therefrom by an apron Q.
