An Improved Filter applicable for use in Sewage Treatment-, Ore Reducing and the like Processes.

Hydro-extractors &c.- Consists of a self-clearing filter adapted for use in various processes, such as the separation of the solid and liquid parts of sewage, extracting oil from fish-refuse manure, and obtaining the very fine coal in coal-washing, or the finely-divided ore in ore - reducing operations. It may also be used for extracting oil from condenser water by mixing the water with sawdust &c., which absorbs the oil and is then separated in the filter. Fig. 1 shows a simple form for small sizes. It comprises a cylinder G formed of two perforated plates to contain the filtering-medium, and a cylinder C carrying a helical scraper N faced with rubber. Provision is made for adjusting the diameter of the scraper. The two cylinders are rotated so as to cause a centrifugal action, but at different speeds, so that the scraper may carry the separated solid towards the outlet T, the filtered liquid escaping at U. The cylinders are supported between heads E, F and A, B, the heads being secured to trunnions. The trunnion H is hollow, for the supply of the liquid to be treated, which is directed by a diaphragm L through perforations in the cylinder C into the filtering-cylinder, while a diaphragm S confines the filtered liquid to the outlet U. R is an outer fixed casing. In the larger form of the filter, the cylinders are supported at the inlet end on rollers,. those of the scraper cylinder being mounted on a carriage so that this cylinder can be withdrawn from the other, if necessary. The diaphragm L is made conical, with its apex directed towards the incoming liquid. Fig. 2a shows the gearing by which the differential motion of the two cylinders is obtained. On the shaft x which receives the power is fixed an eccentric 2, on which is mounted a wheel 3 having internal teeth gearing with a pinion keyed on the inner shaft v. The wheel 3 is prevented from rotation by a projection 4 passing through a hole in a stud 5. Fig. 2 is a part longitudinal section showing the construction of the cylinders. The inner plate of the filtering-cylinder is secured to longitudinal beams 8, and the outer plate 12 is made in segments independently removable. The scraper cylinder a is attached to the stronger perforated shell b. Other constructional details are specified.
