The Manufacture and Production of New Intermediate Products and of New Azo Colouring Matters therefrom, the use of these Dyes in Dyeing and their Treatment on the Fibre.
13,664. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. July 30. Dyes, artificial.-Relates to the production of a new class of azo dyes which are characterized by possessing a sulphurous-acid phenolic ester group which renders the dyes more soluble in water than the corresponding dyes which do not contain this group. The sulphurous-acid group may be split off with production of the less soluble products, and, when this is effected after the dyeing operation, a high degree of fastness against milling and soap is developed in some cases. The sulphurous-acid group may be split off from the dyes when in solution by alkalies, acids, or a suitable oxidizing-agent, such as sodium-cupric glycerate, but after dyeing the best results are obtained by the use of cupric acetate, a further lake formation or other change being also produced by this reagent in some cases. The sulphurous acid esters employed are produced as described in Specification No. 1387, A.D. 1900. (1) Monoazo dyes are produced as follows :- The sulphurous acid ester of 1 : 8-amidonaphthol is diazotized and run into an alkaline solution of #-naphthol, whereby an orange-red wool dye is obtained. In a similar manner dyes may be obtained from m-phenylenediamine, resorcin, or 2 : 3- dihydroxynaphthalene instead of #-naphthol, and from the diazo compound of the sulphurous acid ester of 1 : 5-amidonaphthol or its sulphonic acid, or of 1 : 8-amidonaphthol-5-sulphonic acid, or of the product obtained by the action of sulphurous acid upon m-toluylenediamine, instead of the diazo compound of 1 : 8-ami donaphthol. A violetred dye is obtained by combining the diazo compound of the sulphurous ester of 1 :8 amidonaphthol with 1 : 8-amidonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid, or 1 : 4-naphthol sulphonic acid in alkaline solution. (2) Disazo dyes are produced as follows :-The diazo compound of the sulphurous acid ester of 1 : 8-amidonaphthol is combined with 1 :8-amidonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid, and the product is further combined with diazobenzene. The dye yields on wool a blue-black shade which is changed to a red-brown of greater fastness by subsequent treatment with copper acetate. Diazotized aniline is combined first with 1 :8-amidonaphthol-4- sulphonic acid in acid solution, and the product is combined with 1 : 8-amidonaphthol sulphurous acid ester in alkaline solution. This dye yields on wool a blue-black which is changed by copper acetate towards green. Diazotized 1:8-amidonaphtholsulphurous-ester-5-sulphonic acid is combined with alpha-naphthylamine, and the product is further diazotized and combined with 1 :4-naphthol sulphonic acid, whereby a violet wool dye is obtained, or with alpha-naphthylamine whereby a reddish-black wool dye is obtained.
