Improvements in Metallic and Fibrous Packing Mechanism, for Piston Rods, Valve Rods, Tappet Valves, or other Reciprocating Rods, Stop or Sluice Valve Spindles, Expansion Pipes, Steam Boiler Gauge Glasses, and for similar purposes as set forth.
5299. Isherwood, O. March 13. Stuffing-boxes.-Relates to metallic packing, and to fibrous packing, for piston-rods, valve rods, and other reciprocating rods, for stop or sluice valve spindles, for expansion pipes, steam-boiler gauge glasses, and the like. One form of the metallic packing is shown in section in Fig. 1. In this. a number of soft metal rings E, of the form shown in Fig. 7, are placed together so as to form a continuous helix, with an external helical recess. These rings are embraced by a spring G fitting into this recess and clasping the rings to the rod D. At the ends the packing beds on ball-seated and floating rings a, A and b, B. The gland U may contain a smaller gland to hold soft packing for keeping the rod clean. In another form, instead of the spring G, a spring F made from a coiled tube is used. This tube may be made to communicate with a lubricator through a duct in the gland, as shown in Fig. 11, and have holes in it for delivering the lubricant directly to the rod. Fig. 21 shows one of the forms of fibrous packing. The coil M, which acts as a clasping-spring, is furnished with a soft flexible lining K in place of the white metal ring E.
