Stop gear.-Comprises automatic cut-off or stop gear for the engines of pumping systems, to prevent damage when the load is either increased or decreased beyond a certain limit. Fig. 1 shows one form of the invention in elevation. In the gas, steam, or other motive-agent supply pipe S is a cut-off valve E, with a weighted tilting lever f by which it may be actuated. This lever is arranged so that it can be operated on by the rise of a weighted piston X in a cylinder A connected to the rising main M and also to a second cylinder B. The piston in the cylinder A is caused to rise, and the valve E to be thereby closed, either on the closure of the outlet ball valve in the pipe M when the high-level tank becomes full, or by the fall of a weighty float F when the low-level pump well has become empty. The fall of the float F releases the weighted piston in the cylinder B, and allows it to force up the piston in the cylinder A.
