Aug. 27 Tempering.-An apparatus for use in hardening the blades of table and like knives is provided with a revolving blade-carrier having three radial arms f, furnished with serrated jaws g, h. The jaws g are movable, being pressed outwards by springs v, and connected to oscillatory levers j, which carry set-screws l, bearing upon the periphery of a fixed block m. This block is formed with circular and flat bearing-surfaces alternating, and during a complete revolution of the carrier the jaws g are oscillated so as to grip the blades before, and release them after, their passage through the bath a. The carrier is mounted on a shaft d, carrying a collar which is alternately connected to, and disengaged from, a driving-wheel t, by means of spring-controlled pins which engage with rack teeth on the wheel. The bolsters of the knives n may rest between the jaws and flanges on bolsterplates o, or, when the knives have solid handles, these may be supported by studs on the bolsterplates.
