Improvements in Apparatus for Picking up or Raising Water for Locomotive Engines and Tenders whilst they are Running

Locomotives.-Relates to water pick-up apparatus for locomotive tenders, and consists of means for utilizing the momentum of a portion of the ascending water to help in lifting the scoop. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the scoop b is pivoted at c to brackets projecting from the pipe a and held by stays e. Lifting and lowering by band can be effected by the toggles p, r and the rod s, which is connected to a hand-lever. Connected with the pipe a is a vertical cylinder g, the piston in which is linked to a bifurcated lever 4 with a stop at 5 for acting on the scoop during the last few inches of the lowering movement as it touches the water. The tube leading into the cylinder g is furnished with a deflector for directing water into it and with a non-return valve. It thus acts, not only to lift the scoop, but to provide an air cushion during the lowering. In another form, the water cylinder is inclined, and is connected by a slotted link to the joint in the toggle linkage.
