2171. Kearns, T., and Coin, I. C. Jan. 27. Flasks; water bottles.-Relates to canteens for army or tourists' use. To enable the vessel to be filled from a shallow stream &c. without disturbing sediment, it is provided with a pump cylinder and piston 3, 11, by means of which the water can be drawn through the valves 10, 16 and ports 14 i n t o the vessel. The outer end of the cylinder may also be fitted with a filter, which may consist of strainer discs 24, 25 and a fibrous filling 23, inserted in the cup or thimble 5 screwed on the lip 4 of the cylinder. The outer end of the thimble may be fitted with a removable stopper or cap. The piston-rod 12 is provided with a swivelling- head 30, having a ring 19 for attaching the vessel to the shoulder strap or belt, and serving also for operating the piston. When not in use, the pistonrod is fixed in position by a suitable connection, such as a screwed stem 18 on the head 30 engaging in a screwed socket 17 in the rim of the vessel. The outlet neck 2 is closed by a cork or other suitable stopper.
