An Appliance for Balancing End Pressure in Lengths of Pipe.

Metal pipes ; junction pieces; expansion joints.- Relates to means for preventing stress or damage that might occur in lengths of pipe between fixed points when subjected to high internal pressure, by balancing the end pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the appliance for balancing the end pressure in a length of pipe between two lateral branches which are in one plane. At one end, the cylinder b communicating with the pipe interior is fitted with the piston c, to which is connected the crosshead d, in turn connected by the ties e, bolts, or wire ropes with the crosshead f. The crosshead f bears against the projection g on the end of the pipe. When the lateral branches are at rightangles, the crossheads d, f are connected to a ring surrounding the pipe about the middle, so that the ties e may clear the branches. The pipes are free to expand and contract if provided with an expansion joint. With steam pipes, a strong spring is interposed between the crosshead f and the projection g.
