4646. Maybluh, C. F. Sept. 25, A.D. 1901, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Sulphur.-Substances containing sulphur, such as spent gas purifier waste, are treated to obtain the sulphur. If purifier waste is the substance treated, ammonia and ferrocyanide are also obtained, while the residue is suitable for re-use in the purifiers. The substance is charged into a desulphurizing tank 1, which also receives a supply of petroleum or other mineral oil. The temperature is raised to 135‹ to 150‹ C. by means of a steam coil connected to the main 32, and the mixture is agitated by a mixer. The petroleum at this temperature dissolves out the sulphur, and the solution passes through a double filter bottom and a tube 5 to a lower refrigerating vessel 2, wherein the temperature is reduced by cooling coils connected to the tube 45. By this means the sulphur is precipitated. Rotating brushes prevent the deposition of sulphur upon the cooling-coils. The mixture is passed to the lower vessel 3, also having a double filter bottom, frcm which the petroleum runs through the tube 27 to the reservoir 13. The sulphur is next treated in the vessel 3 with benzine to remove all the petroleum. This benzine is drawn up from the vessel 15 by opening the connection to the vacuum main 38. The benzine solution obtained runs into the separating-vessel 4. Any benzine remaining with the residue in vessel 3, is recovered by adding water and heating by means of a steam coil. The benzine vapours are condensed in the coil 23, and collected in the vessel 15. The benzine solution in the vessel 4 is heated by a steam coil connected to the main 32. The benzine is distilled off, and is condensed by the coil 24 and collected in the vessel 15. The petroleum is afterwards run off to the reservoir 13. The petroleum is forced by the pump 57 to the tank 12, from which it may be passed to the vessel 1 by connecting the latter to the vacuum main 38. The vacuum in the latter is produced by a Koerting ejector 60. The residue in the vessel 1 is treated with benzine to extract the whole of the oil, the liquid running through the tube 11 to the separating-vessel 4.
