Improvements in Marine Torches, and in Marine Torch Burners.

Signals, lamp and floating.-Relates to acetylene torches such as are described in Specification No. 22,227, A.D. 1 8 9 9, o r torches and lamps for marine or other purposes. Fig. 1 shows a marine torch having a body 1, a top-plate 2, and a bottom-plate 3. Inserted in the plate 3 is a cup 4 having openings through which water may pass to the carbide, which i s contained in a sack 10 secured by a wire &c. 11. The opening in the bottom of the cup 4 is hermetically closed by a tear-off strip 6, which is removed when the torch is to be used. The bottom is weighed at 9 to cause the torch to float in upright position. A thin metal vessel 13 having openings 15 is preferably placed in the torch. The burners are formed by raised portions 16 stamped on the top-plate 2 or on a ring attached to it, and perforated at 17 so that the flames from two adjacent perforations impinge and combine. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which two converging perforations 17 are formed in each burner projection 16. In order to filter the gas, a sheet 27 of porous paper, cloth, &c. is placed beneath the burners. In the top 2 is fixed a cup 18 for calcium phosphide which forms the automatic igniter for the acetylene. The opening in the cup 18 is closed by a rubber &c. pad 53 held in place by a disc 22 which covers the burners and is attached by a tear-off strip 23. This strip and the disc are removed when the torch is to be used. To ensure the lighting of the acetylene, oneof the burners 16 has a perforation which directs the jet towards the opening in the top of the cup 18. In a torch which is re-chargeable, the burner ring is removably fixed in a ring secured to the top-plate 2. The outer edge of the ring is screwed for securing a sealing-cap such as 22. The bottom of the torch may be secured to the body 1 by screwing it on. The Provisional Specification describes also (1) a means for holding burners, or burner tips in cups in the top-plate, and securing them by a special cement or by compression; and (2) a means for insulating burners from the heat by the securing-cement, or by asbestos packing.
