20,022. Mitton, T. J. L. Sept. 13. Medicines for animals. Consists in the use of cellulose containing or charged with chlorine gas or chloride salt deposit, to be mixed with medicine either in the form of drenches or physic balls or liniments and embrocations. The cellulose is preferably obtained from sawdust or waste wood fibre, but bran or the like may be used. The sawdust is purified by being placed in a pan or the like having a perforated false bottom, a space being left for the passage of gas, steam, hot or cold air, &c. Water charged with chlorine or other suitable gas is added in sufficient quantity to saturate the sawdust. A liquid carbonate, chloride, or other neutralizing-agent is next run in to eliminate or destroy the poisonous matter produced by the action of the gas. The residue in the vessel contains or is now charged with chlorine gas or equivalent salt deposit, the cellulose acting as a vehicle for the chlorine. It is washed with hot or cold water and is heated, dried, and crushed or ground.
