Rowing-machines.-Relates to a rowing-machine comprising a framing resembling a portion of a boat with a sliding or other seat and a pair of rotatable oar looms 2, mounted upon the tapered horizonal arm 4 of a crank 5, and secured thereto by a tapered adjustable pin 6, working in a groove 7. The vertical arm of the crank 5 is surrounded by a roller clutch-box 12, formed on a friction wheel 9, and provided with recesses, in which the rollers are set. On pulling the handle 2, the clutch engages the wheel 9 and rotates it against the resistance of a band-brake 10, the resistance of which may be varied by means of a thumb-screw. Instead of the clutch described, the crank 5 may be formed with an eccentric adapted to force a clutch-plate against the inner periphery of the wheel 9. On the forward motion of the body, the resistance is removed by the opposite movement of the clutch mechanism, and the handle may be partially rotated, as in feathering. The dip of the oar may be varied by mounting the mechanism in casings 14, pivotally supported at 15, in bearings in the side supports 16.
