23,115. Niblett, J. T. Oct. 23. Quantity meters.-Relates to mercury voltameters for use chiefly as charge indicators in connection with storage batteries. Mercury d is contained in a branched tube b provided with a glass stop-cock e. A solution f of mercuric sulphate or nitrate forms an electrolyte bridging across the arms of the tube. Current flows as a shunt to the main circuit, through the instrument from one platinum wire g to the other, mercury being transferred electrolytically from one side to the other during charge and returned during discharge. A scale gx indicates the state of the battery, and an alarm bell k may be arranged to ring when the battery is fully charged, or when it is exhausted. The Provisional Specification states that the alteration in weight may effect a balance, the indication being given by a swinging needle; or the balance may work a counting-train, the current being reversed after each swing.
