摘要
22,729. Marter, C., Hanbury, J. D., and Gardner, C. S. Oct. 18. Balls.-Relates to the production of substitutes for leather, raw hide, ivory, &c. for the manufacture of billiard balls, golf balls, &c. Waste leather or raw hide is reduced to fibre or powder, and treated with steam or boiling water so as to produce a gelatinous or pasty mass, which is pressed to eliminate the water and is moulded into the required form. The material may be coloured by aniline dyes, or may be bleached with sodium or potassium peroxide. The bleached material closely resembles ivory. A flexible material is prepared by dissolving alum and salt in the steam or boiling water which is injected into the comminuted mass. The artificial leather so produced can be curried with tallow and oiled. To produce a material impervious to water, a solution of shellac in wood naphtha &c. is applied to the comminuted leather before the application of the steam. When using raw hide, the substance is boiled with a solution of alum, and zinc sulphate or common salt is afterwards added to the liquid. The material is removed, and is moulded into shape. By the use of a larger quantity of sulphate of zinc &c., a white material is obtained resembling ivory. Golf balls are made from comminuted raw hide mixed with cork powder, treated with steam or boiling water, and moulded. The ball so made is covered with a thin coating of gutta-percha solution, and, after this is dry, the ball is placed in hot water and again pressed in a mould. It is finally painted.
