Rolling. - Blanks for the manufacture of sector-shaped spokes for railway carriages, wagons, and vehicles, are rolled in gapped back-action rolls from rectangular billets or slabs. The rolls are geared together inside the housings as shown in Fig. 14, and are grooved to form eyes 1 ... 8, through which one end of the billet is successively passed, till it assumes the shape shown in Fig. 11, the other end being then treated to produce the finished blank shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 9 show two stages in the rolling of one end. An additional eye may be provided to bend or crank the ends, as shown in Fig. 13, to facilitate the bending of the blank into sector shape. The legs b have wedge-shaped projections b2 by which they are securely held in the boss which is cast around them. The lega may be reduced in width by passing them through additional eyes, Fig. 20, the grooves having projecting portions f2, g3, or by passing the legs on edge between groove, of varying depths.
