24,388. Wallis, J. E. Nov. 7. Motor road vehicles traction engines and road locomotives. - Relates to an arrangement for delivering sand or like substance in front of the wheels of light locomotives, motors, and traction engines to prevent slipping. A box containing sand is oscillated by a system of levers worked off an eccentric, and has an opening, closed by levers and opened by spring action, through which sand issues. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a light locomotive fitted with the arrangement. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation of the same. The grit box A is pivoted on the spindle B, and has holes C covered by the slide D which is raised by the spring T. The hand-lever L actuates the rods Q, S, which, working in guides R, U, keeps the slide D down. The same lever also causes the rod F, which is connected to the spindle B by a lever E, to bear upon the eccentric I fitted on the crank shaft J. The spring K holds the end of rod F up to the eccentric I when the lever L is in the working position. In a modification, the grit box is a continuation of the ashpan with outlets in the sides through which a continuous chain travels and draws the sand after it. A hand-lever puts the chain-wheel in and out of gear.
