2858. Jakobi, P. Feb. 6. Signals on engines and trains. - Single - stroke bells are rung mechanically by series of contactlevers c, d on the line, when these are raised by connecting-wires. They may be connected with the ordinary signals, to be audible in case of fog ; or they may be operated by independent hand-levers for use by the engine drivers to block the line. They may also be operated by the wires only. The contact-levers c, d forming a set are connected together by a bar, Fig. 3 ; in the form shown, one lever carries an additional arm c', which stands up when the other levers are turned down, and gives a single stroke on the bell. The hammer of the bell k, Fig. 1, is carried by a spring i, and operated by movement of a lever o in either direction about its fulcrum n, the lever o having two pins m, m1 to act on the spring i.
