8556. Reinecken, A. April 15. Filters; cleansing.-Relates to the construction of sand filters and to means for cleansing the sand. The space c, between the perforated corrugated casing e and the series of superposed rings d, is filled with sand. The liquid, introduced to the chamber x, flows between the ring, d, through the sand, and passes by means of the perforations to the outer casing a, where it runs down to the ring g and outlet f. When the said requires cleansing, the bottom k is opened and the sand discharged into the washing-apparatus t. The upper part r1 of the central pipe is removed and water is forced through the jet l, the current produced draws the sand through the openings o and carries it up the pipe r to flow from the top back into the chamber t. The dirty water escapes through the annular strainer p. Clean witer is supplied through the pipe z and perforated pipe q, to furnish the amount necessary to prevent the suction of the jet o from maintaining a circulation of dirty water. When the sand is sufficiently clean, the upper part r1 is replaced, and the jet o employed to return the sand through the pipe r, r' to the filter chamber c. In a modification, several filters are arranged around a central washing- apparatus, which is provided with inclined guide troughs extending beneath each filter.
