Tool - holders; workholders; tapping. - A socket holder for drilling, tapping, and studding, for use in drilling-machines, lathes, &c., has a tubular head 1, with a shank 5 to fit the machine, and two collars A, B to limit the traverse of a sleeve 3. A socket 4, shaped to hold the drill, tap, or stud 6, is inserted in the head and held by segmental pads 2 passing through slots in the head and engaging recesses in the socket. When the sleeve 3 is raised, as shown, the pads can move outwards to release the socket, which is re-engaged by moving the sleeve downwards. As there are no projecting parts, the sleeve 3 can be operated while the machine is running.
