Improvements in Apparatus or Means for Feeding Packing Machines, Printing Machines Paper Bag Machines, Cutting or Serrating Apparatus or other Mechanism, with Paper, Cardboard or similar Material from a Continuous Length or Roll of the Material
2810. Rose, W. Feb. 5. Feeding-apparatus for webs.-Webs of paper, cardboard, and similar material are fed to printing, cutting, packing, or wrapping, paper-bag, label, and other machines by apparatus such as that shown in Fig. 1. The web is fed from a roll 7 mounted on a drum 6, which has movable sections adapted to be moved inwards and outwards by a slotted disc so as to fit rolls having central apertures of different sizes. The hub of the roll is operated upon by a ring brake 25 having arms 26, 27 which are actuated by a screw 28 to tighten or loosen the brake, a pin 29 on the framing serving to arrest the arm 27, and thus the brake, while the web is being unwound. From the roll 7, the web passes over a guide rod or roller 9 and under a tension rod or roller 10 which acts by gravity and moves in guides 11. Thence it passes over a feed or "paying-out" roller 13, against which it is pressed by a roller 12 carried on a weighted arm. From the roller 13, the web passes to a guide-rod 14, or it may pass to the rod 14 direct from the rod 10, and thence under the roller 15, and between the pairs of feed-rollers 16, 17 and 18, 19 to the cutters 20, 21, the upper rollers 16, 18 being pressed against the rollers 17, 19 by a counterweighted arm. The web may also pass directly from the rollers 12, 13 to the rollers 18, 19. The roller 13 and the rollers 17, 19 are provided with one or more flat faces on their circumferences of slightly greater width than the web, so that the web will not be fed by these rollers when the flat faces come in contact with it, the flat faces being so arranged that one roller is inoperative while the other is operative. The rollers 17, 19, instead of being provided with flat faces, may be provided with cams which intermittently lift the top rollers. Again, the roller 17 is larger than the roller 19 so that, both being driven by corresponding gearing, the web will be fed more quickly by the roller 17 than by the roller 19, thus causing the web to be slack between both rollers, to permit the entrance of teeth on the flat parts of the roller 19 into perforations in the web, so that the rear parts of the teeth abut against the rear sides of the perforations. By this. means, definite lengths of the paper will always be presented intermittently to the cutters &c. The web may be first fed to the printing- machine, such as to produce multicoloured devices, and then to the cutting-devices. In the case shown, the cutters consist of a fixed knife 20 and a movable knife 21 carried on pivoted arms 43 actuated by arms. According to the Provisional Specification, the web as it passes between the rollers 17, 19 may be pressed down by a wire, and it may be fed as described over measuring-rollers.
