8485. Hemmings, R. L. April 14. Indexing.-Relates to indexed books, suitable for timetables &c. in which the necessity of a separate index is obviated. The leaves or sheets are stepped, and on the projecting edge of each sheet or series of sheets is printed a summary of the matter contained thereon. The cover of the book may be used on its inside as a first sheet. Each projecting leaf edge is of a different colour from the others or from those adjacent to it. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the book is divided into sections, each section having its own series of leaves cut in graduated sizes. The top, bottom, and side edges of the leaves or portions of the same may be made to project beyond the edges of adjacent leaves in a similar manner, or the corners only of the sheets may be stepped to provide spaces for an index. When a single leaf of any particular size is insufficient to contain all the subject-matter, two or more sheets of the same size may be employed.
