Controlling automatically.-Relates to apparatus for automatically opening or closing ventilators in theatres, public halls, schools, factories, &c., on the outbreak of fire, or for analogous purposes. A rope fixed at one end is connected through levers to the ventilators, so as to hold them open or closed in opposition to a spring or weight, which closes or opens them when the rope is severed by the flames. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus applied to lights. A spring 6, Fig. 4, within a barrel 7 is connected by a rod 8, chain 10, and a pin 13 to adjusting-holes in a grooved cam 11 mounted on a shaft 4, Fig. 1, connected by jointed rods 3 to the lights 1, which are held in the normal position in opposition to the spring 6 by a rope 14 attached to an arm 5 on the shaft and composed of hemp saturated with an inflammable material or partly of an easily-melting substance, such as celluloid. The controlling-lever of a single light is fixed direct thereto, and acts in opposition to a spiral spring pressing on the light.
