Points and switches; electric railways and tramways.-Relates to apparatus for controlling and operating the rail points and the overhead points of electric and other railways and tramways. The rail point A, Fig. 1, and the overhead point or frog B are connected by levers and rods or other suitable means to the upright shaft F beside or within the nearest street standard. This upright shaft F is provided at its upper end with a crank L, which is connected by the wires K, K1 to a pair of pivoted levers H, H1 carried upon the arms of standards fixed in front of and behind the points. When it is desired to actuate the points, a movable projecting arm on the car, controlled by the driver, strikes one or other of the noses J on the pivoted levers H, H1. One of these levers opens the switch A and the frog B, and the other restores them both to the original position. If desired, an automatic jockey weight device, Fig. 3, may be applied to the crank O for the purpose of obviating any tendency towards undue displacement of the rail point A. The upright shaft F, in a modification, may be arranged in conjunction with the second standard C, in which case the wire K1 is dispensed with, the lever H' being connected to the end of the lever L upon the shaft F. To obviate any likelihood of the arm on the car missing the nose J due to the car being laterally displaced, an extended grating mounted on a loose sleeve fitted on a supplementary arm parallel to the arm D may be used. This sleeve has an adjustable bracket in front of the nose J, which is thereby moved as the sleeve is rotated by the car. In another modified form, the rail point and the overhead frog are actuated independently and at different times. In addition to the pivoted levers H, H1, two levers with suitable connections are interposed between them on a separate standard, and so arranged that first the rail point is put in position, then the frog is put in position and rail point reversed, and lastly the frog is reversed.
