Gates.-A gate is constructed and mounted in such a manner that it allows the passage of an animal in one direction, but prevents its return, or the passage of another animal, until re - set by hand. Fig. 1 shows a poultry nest box 3, provided with a gate 6 hung in slotted bearings 4. The gate is formed of two bant rods 5, 6, preferably as shown in Fig. 3, and can be raised by the fowl inserting its head and neck between the rods. When the gate falls after the passage of the fowl, the lower bent end strikes against the floor of the nest box, the pivots of the gate are thereby raised, and the lower end engages in a recess, slot, or right-angled groove 9, thereby preventing egress or ingress. In order to return the gate to its normal position when the lid 13 of the box 3 is opened, the pivot, or a loop 18 thereon, is connected by a chain or cord 17 to the lid. The gate may be set in a partially open position by a pivoted hook 20. According to the Provisional Specification, the gate may be re-set by mechanically raising it, or by lowering and turning the floor.
