17,871. Oliver, C. Aug. 18. Arc lamps, thermally regulated. In a lamp having an arc of approximately constant length between the lower ends of two carbons G, G', Fig. 7, the carbons are fed down past frictional retaining- devices Fx by the pressure of a weight E, supported by a vertical rod of glass or other rigid material, when the arc rises so far as to soften or disintegrate the lower end of this rod. The lower end of the glass rod K, shown in the side view, Fig. 5, may rest on a curved tongue j1 extending downward from a tube J, which is attached to the frame of the lamp by a bayonet joint or otherwise, near the lower ends of the carbons. The softened end of the glass rod subsequently melts and falls off in drops. Fig. 7 shows a lamp with the carbons sliding in inclined slotted tubes C, C1, which are carried on a pivot C', and are movable by a series solenoid N and a core, to strike the arc, and to regulate it if desired. Angular links dx are pivoted to the weight E, and bear on the upper ends of the carbons. The upper part of the glass rod is situated in a slotted vertical tube H, into which a pin projects from the weight E, over the glass rod. The frictional pieces Fx are carried by springs on the tubes C, C', and convey the current to the carbons. A reflector L surrounds the arc, which may be of the "flame" description. Modifications are described. The friotional pieces Fx may be carried by weighted angle-levers. The carbons may be parallel, at a small fixed distance apart, and the arc may be deflected towards the rod stop j1 by a weak magnetic field or otherwise. The arc may be struck by a carbon piece, carried by a lever, and movable from under the main carbons by linkage of the lever to the armature of a series electromagnet. Otherwise, the carbons may be inclined so as to cross each other above the arc. The angular links dx may be dispensed with, the weight E being provided with a fixed pin or pins to extend through slots in the tubes C, C1. The glass rod may be shorter or longer than the carbons, and connected therewith by gearing. Curved or screw-shaped fusible &c. rods may be used. A lamp may contain a number of pairs of carbons, each with a glass rod, means being provided for supplying current to a fresh pair when a pair burns out.
