21,540. Jackson, J. Oct. 7. Lifts. - Consists of means for locking the handing-rope, switch, or other controlling means of a lift or elevator except when the cage door or gate is closed, in such a way that the handing-rope &c. is locked almost immediately the gate begins to open, and is not unlocked until the gate is almost completely closed. In one arrangement, Fig. 1A, a rod q, pivoted to one of the joints of the collapsable gate moving in line with the fixed end of the gate, is connected to a cam rod p acting on the rope grip j. As soon as the gate begins to open, the inclined part p1 closes the grip and the rod p in its further movement merely serves to hold the grip closed. These operations take place in reversed order as the gate closes. Where the controlling means is a switch, its handle is locked or unlocked by means of a bolt j, Fig. 3, operated by means of a cam slot having an inclined part p' and a parallel part p' corresponding respectively to the incline p1 and the plain part of the rod p, Fig. 1A. The rod p is operated from one or other of the gate joints according to the length of movement required. Where a barrier e, Fig. 5, movable in a vertical plane, is used instead of a gate, the locking or unlocking is effected by the horizontal movement of the part e2 of the barrier in a guide v, the arrangement being such that the handing-rope &c. is not unlocked until the part e' is pushed home in its guide, as shown in dotted lines, in which position the barrier cannot be opened. The part e2 may be connected direct to the cam p1 &c., Fig. 3, or may actuate the rod q as shown.
