Cooling gases; refrigerating.-In a system made up of a number of pipes through which the cooling-medium passes while the air or gas to be cooled circulates around the pipes, means are provided for reversing at intervals the direction of the air or gas with the view to the removal of the accumulating frost on the pipes. Fig. 2 shows in diagram a plan of the arrangement, and Fig. 3 an elevation, partly in section, of one part of the same. By a suitable opening. or closure of the valves A', A', 01, 0', E', &c. the cooling-medium is caused to circulate in one direction, as, for instance, that shown by the arrows, while the gas is drawn over the pipes by a fan C in the opposite direction. By reversing the position of the valves A1, A', &c., the direction of the cooling-medium is changed and at the same time the fan is reversed so that the direction of the gases is also reversed. In case of ammonia or carbonic acid being used in the place of sulphurous acid, the gases of the cooling-medium are drawn off mid-way in the length of the piping, as at Z. In Fig. 3, the header D' is shown with the external cocks E', E', &c., through which, with the pipes H1 &c., the cooling- medium passes to enter the system. The position of the valves and the direction of the rotation of the fan may be simultaneously changed.
