Improvements relating to the Closing of the Entrances to the Nests of Domestic Fowls and other Birds.

Nests; traps.-In order that egg-eating fowls, pigeons, and other birds may be detected and birds identified with their eggs, means are provided for automatically closing the entrance to a nest when a bird enters. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a hen's nest. A passage-way b is attached to, or connected with, the nest-box a, and is fitted with a hinged or pivoted platform c normally held up by a weight or a spring k and connected with hinged catches i in contact with projections i1 on the sliding door f. When a hen steps on the platform, the catches i are moved and the door falls. The door may fall on to elastic cushions, and a piece of elastic l or other means may be provided to assist the movement. When the door is raised by means of the hole m, the bevelled catches i pass under the bevelled projections i1 and hold it up. The passageway is formed of slats b1, and the box a is provided with a lid a'. The door f is fitted with a stop to limit its movement, and its lower edge is arched so as not to damage the bird's tail. In a modification, the door is formed of weighted canvas or other flexible material through eyelets in which vertical cords pass, and it is held up by means of a hinged rod passing under a cone attached to the string by which it is lifted. This string may be connected to a hinged rod so as to raise a flag or other signal when the door falls.
