Testing wire, cord, and the like; wire gauges.-Relates to apparatus for testing the degree of inequality of yarn, wire, ribbon, cord, or the like, and for registering the results of the testing. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the cord f is led between a block a and the bob e of a pendulum d, e, adjustably suspended. The inequalities in the cord drag the bob e forward and then allow it to swing back. This motion is recorded on a travelling strip of paper k by means of a style d2 attached to the stem d. The total movements of the pendulum are shown by a dial n which is rotated behind the fixed pointer n1 by means of a pawl n2 on the bob e and a ratchet-wheel. The cord is wound upon a drum h, a dial m indicating the amount so wound on. The paper strip k, Fig. 5, may be marked by longitudinal and transverse lines showing respectively the extent of the inequalities and the lengths of cord tested. The transverse lines k' may be marked in the machine itself by means of a marker on a roller. The parts, such as a, e, between which the cord &c. travels may have various forms, and the recording may be effected in various ways. Fig. 3 shows a form in which the cord f passes between rollers p, r1, the roller r1 being carried by a lever r which makes the record and drives the dial v in the manner shown. The lever r may be replaced by a compound system of levers.
