An Improved Means for Preventing the Overfilling of Vessels for Containing Liquids.

Bottling; funnels.-In filling bottles, jars, and other receptacles with water, oil, or other liquid, or in filling an oil-container for a lamp, a device such as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is used. To the reservoir or vessel a from which the liquid is to be filled is fitted a flexible pipe c, to the end of which is secured a tube, funnel, or nozzle d, having at the top a wider portion e which is inserted into the flexible tube. The tube c is secured to the raised part e by a collar f, having a flange at the base provided with arms h for resting on the reservoir or vessel b to be filled. The raised part e and the collar may be threaded &c., and the tube d may be telescopic or extensible. To fill the vessel b, the device is placed in position as shown in Fig. 1, and the vessel a is inverted. When the liquid in the vessel b reaches the tube d, the air above the liquid in the vessel b is prevented from escaping into the vessel a through the tube d, and the flow ceases. The external air at the same time compresses the tube c, as shown in Fig. 2.
