Steam &c. turbines.-A steam or other elastic - fluid turbine of the outward - flow type, suitable for propelling ships and fitted with clutch gearing for reversing, is shown in Fig. 1. An inner wheel 18 has rings of blades 50 which co - operate with similar rings of blades 49 on two lateral wheels 17. Each wheel is surrounded by a pair of gripping-rings 26 fixed to the casing by three sets of screwed sleeves 28 surrounding screwed actuating-shafts 32. These shafts have external crank arms linked together so that they are simultaneously actuated and cause the appropriate gripping-rings to grip either the inner wheel or the outer wheels. When the inner wheel is locked, as shown, the clearance of the outer gripping-rings frees automatic clutches on the outer wheels which engage with discs 15 on the driving- shaft 7. These clutches have shoes 46, Fig. 3, carried by links 41 and normally pressed against the discs by the pressure of springs 45 on a lever 43 and the centrifugal action of the lever itself. When the engine is reversed, the outer wheels are held stationary and the inner wheel is locked to the middle disc. The discs and wheels have leakage-baffling tongue-and-groove devices 16. The central steam-supply channels 9 are regulated by a gridiron valve 62 connected by rods 64 to governor-actuating mechanism.
