13,908. Weintraub, E. June 20, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Arc lamps.-Lamps are specially arranged for alternating currents, and are applicable as rectifiers. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for a single alternating current, Two electrodes 3, 4 are connected tc the supply conductors 1, 2, and a third electrode 5 is connected to these conductors through inductances 7,8. The electrodes 3,4 are made of copper, titanium carbide, or a non-arcing metal, so that an arc is not struck between them. The electrode 5 may be made of an oxide or carbide, such as mag. netite or titanium carbide. Uni-direction arcs flow to the electrode 5, the inductances 7, 8 maintaining the flow, and the rectified current may be utilized in apparatus connected between the electrode 5 and the point 6, as shown by the cross. The arrangement is applicable as a lamp for use with lowfrequency currents. The same principle may be employed with polyphase currents, Fig. 2 showing a three-phase system.
