7004. Brooks, T. March 26. Looms, pile-forming in; loose-reed motions.-In looms for weaving terry towels and terry cloth, the bottom end of the reed 16 is held fast or released as indicated by the pattern mechanism, by which the position of a pivoted forked lever 1 is controlled through a wire or cord 2. The reed case 20 is carried by wings 19 on the reed-case rod 6, and the reed is held or freed according as a duckbill 17 passes under or over a locking-piece 18. The position of the duck-bill 17 is controlled by that of a lever 7 fast on the reed-case rod 6 and provided with two pins 8, 9. A lever 10 is pivoted on the lay sword 5, and has loosely mounted on it a catch lever 11 with an upper forked end 12, adapted to engage the pin 8. As the lay beats up, the lever 10 is raised by a roller 14 being acted upon by an incline 15, so that the lever 7 is raised or left down according as the lever 11 is in engagement with the pin 8 or resting against the pin 9, or according as the lower arm or the upper arm of the lever 1 was moved forward by the action of the pattern mechanism at the previous backward movement of the lay. A spring 21 steadies the catch lever 11 in both its positions. The apparatus is applicable to fast or loose reed, drop or circular box looms, provided with tappets, jacquards, or other shedding- motions.
