5701. Phillips, J. W., and Holt, S. March 8. Moulding. - Core - making machines of the plunger core-forming type are constructed with frames of reduced height having open bases, without under tables. The rack and pinion are situated at one side of the machine, and have improved operating-mechanism and arrangement of slides and supports. The mould c, Fig. 2, depends from a table b supported by the open frame a arranged with feet l, Fig. 3, instead of a base-plate. The plunger f is coupled to a projection on the rack d which slides on a T-shaped guide e, having a hollow stem to provide for bolting to the frame. A chain attached to an eye r, passes over a pulley s and supports a counterbalance. The pinion shaft g is supported in bosses u, close to the pinion to minimize springing, forming part of a bearing t connected to the frame by flanges v, and formed to enclose the pinion except at the rack opening w. The shaft and its parts may be fitted complete before attaching to the frame. A hand-lever 1 pivoted on the shaft g, is linked to a treadle 2 and carries a pawl engaging a ratchet-wheel 8 provided with a combined detent and brake 3. The lever 1 is pushed back till a finger 15 on the pivoted handle 17 engages a stop 14, the pawl riding on the teeth. On the forward stroke, the treadle is also used and the ratchet-wheel rotates the pinion shaft. When the required length of core is produced by successive oscillations of the lever 1, a stop on the fywheel i engages an arm k carried by the frame. The handle 17 is turned to allow the finger to clear the stop, further backward motion of the lever causing the free end of the pawl to release the detent, and to brake the return motion of the rack and plunger.
