Combustible mixtures are drawn through the ports c, c' and the passage F, from the mix. ing-chamber, formed below the partition f in the adjustable cylindrical valve D. The air and fuel enter the mixing - chamber through the passage G and spraying nozzle a, respectively. The supply of mixture through the ports c, c', and the air supply to the mixing-chamber are regulated by the controlling-valve D, the position of which is adjusted by the engine suction acting on the underside of the piston B. The underside of the piston communicates with the induction passage F through ports g, g1, h in the casing A and valve respectively. When automatically regulating the air and mixture supplies, the back of the piston is open to the atmosphere through the port j. This port may, however, be closed, if it is desired to work non-automatically. The position of the valve may be varied by regulating the position of the adjusting-spring b, or by the hand or otherwise operated arm shown in Fig. 2. A modification is described in which the piston is replaced by a flexible diaphragm, the opposite sides of which may be placed in communication with the atmosphere, when working non-automatically by means of a bye-pass. A second slight modification is described in which the piston Bandits working chamber are dispensed with, the valve being used to regulate automatically the air and mixture supplies by means of a governor. The device may be used to control the mixture supply only.
