9925. Smallwood, A. April 30. Air, supplying; baffles; smoke-consuming.-To secure complete combus. tion in Lancashire, Cornish, or other similar types of boiler furnaces, the products of combustion are passed through a series of chambers behind the fire bridge before they are discharged into the furnace flue. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention as applied to a Lancashire boiler. The furnace A is lined with firebrick, fireclay, or similar material, the lower part being arranged to contain water by means of which the air supply is moistened before entering the furnace through the grate or firebridge Y. The latter is supported clear of the furnace bottom as shown. The products of combustion pass, as shown by arrows, through chambers B, M, N, formed by horizontal partitions K, P, before they enter the flue J, the partition K being provided with corrugated, draughtboard, or similar projections. The partitions, as well as the bottom of the chamber B, are formed of firebrick, fireclay, or similar material which becomes incandescent and serves to promote combustion. As a modification in connection with Lancashire boilers, the above arrangement may be applied to one flue only, in which case the other is divided into two parts by a longitudinal partition for the passage of the gases from the furnace flue. In some cases, the grate is external to the furnace flue and the combustion chamber is contained within it. According to the Provisional Specification, the chamber above the partition K is divided by a vertical partition into two parts, which communicate with each other at the end nearest the furnace, while one only of them communicates with the back end of the chamber B, and the other at its back end with the flue J.
