21,211. Kieseritzky, P. R. Oct. 3. Grant of Patent refused. Secondary batteries.-Negative plates of diminished capacity are regenerated, and new plates are prevented from decreasing in capacity, by immersing wood or the like, which has been treated with an alkaline fluid, in the electrolyte. Certain chemical compounds in the wood go into solution and prevent the plates from flaking. The prior treatment with alkali, such as caustic soda or potash ; sodium carbonate, or ammonia, removes certain injurious organic acids and resins from the woods. Slabs of treated wood may be placed between the positive and negative electrodes, between the cell wall and the electrodes, or in a perforated iron or lead pocket in the cell. Wood wool and shavings, or fibres of analogous organic substances, such as bamboo, reed, straw, turf, &c., may be compressed into slabs before or after treatment with alkali, and used in a similar manner.
