Shrinking and shaping wearing-apparel; dress shields; corsets. - Variouslyshaped articles of apparel, such as dress shields, corset linings, &c., are made, without stitching or hemming, by placing blanks of woven, knit, or braided fabrics about or round variously-shaped forms or models, and then shrinking the fabric thereon by means of sodium, potassium, or other hydrate, sodium sulphide, sulphuric or other acid, or steam in the case of fabrics composed largely of wool. The fabrics may be immersed, or the mercerizing process may be used. For example, in making dress shields, the fabric b, Fig. 2, is folded over the curved edge of the form a1, the three edges of the fabric being secured by stitches b1, and, after shrinkage, as shown in Fig. 3, the fabric is sold for subsequent cutting as desired, or is cut and dyed into the usual form of dress shields, as shown in Fig. 4.
