Automatic Appliance to Prevent Batchairs, Invalid Chairs and Carriages, Perambulators, Mailcarts and other Hand-propelled Vehicles Getting Into or Continuing in Motion of their own Accord
21,100. Polito, C. W. Oct. 1. Invalid carriages; perambulators, children's mail carts, and like vehicles; hand-trucks.-The wheels of bath chairs, invalid chairs and carriages, perambulators, children's mail carts, and other hand-propelled vehicles are automatically locked when the attendant leaves hold of the handle or shafts. Levers E are pivoted to, and adapted to fit grooves H in, the handle F, and their weighted ends J are connected by wires, chains, or cords G to rods A, pivoted at A1 to a bar B. When the levers E are released, the outer end of the rod A on the left-hand side is moved upwards by its weighted opposite end, and that of the rod on the other side moves downwards, into positions between the spokes of the respective wheels, so that the wheels are prevented from moving forwards and backwards respectively. The rods are prevented from passing their horizontal positions by the bar B. They may be covered with india-rubber or other material to reduce the jar when they are interposed between the spokes. When shafts are used, the levers E are placed along them, their weighted ends being turned to one side to keep the wires &c. from contact with the shafts.
