22,918. Ickringrill, A. J. Oct. 25. Measures of length; odometers. -Relates to mechanism for automatically measuring and indicating or recording the distance travelled by the periphery of a roller, especially to mechanism for measuring and marking yarns in warping and beaming machines. A roller a, of say one - foot circumference, is rotated by the passage of the warps or otherwise, and a spur-wheel H upon its shaft serves to transmit motion through differential gearing E, F, G and spur gearing to a shaft c carrying a cam p. This cam may be arranged to act through a spring-controlled lever which is described as arranged to actuate the marking-lever in a warping or beaming machine, or to ring a bell or complete or break an electric current to attract the attention of the operative. The differential and spur gearing can be adjusted to cause the shaft c to make one revolution while the periphery of the roller a travels through any given number of yards, feet, and inches, by causing the bevelwheels g, g1, g2, g3 to be rotated at speeds corresponding to the required number of inches, feet, yards, and tens of yards respectively. The wheels g, g1, g2, g3 are rotated by spur gearing from shafts b, c, d, f, respectively, and these shafts are geared together so as to rotate at speeds proportional to the relative lengths of an inch, a foot, a yard, and ten yards respectively. The rotation of the wheels g, g1, g2, g3 is adjusted by the use of series of spur-wheels upon the shafts b, c, d,f, and any one of the spur-wheels of each series may be put into gear with its respective long pinion b12, c3. d10, f11 by means of change wheels m, Figs. 1 and 3, which are mounted upon levers s. These levers are free to slide upon square cross-bars t carried by arms s2, which oscillate freely upon the respective shafts of the pinions b12, c3, d10, f11. Each lever s extends through the framework W, and may rest upon any one of a series of steps formed in the framework to bring any one of its series of spur-wheels into action. A spring-operated locking-bolt 8 is made to enter a hole in the framework to luck the parts in any position. The lever s may be moved to put the change wheels m out of gear with any of the series of spur-wheels, in which case the bolt 8 is brought opposite a larger hole, through which it passes and causes a spring-controlled rod v to advance and engage the teeth of the nearest wheel m, thus locking the train of gearing. The gearing is arranged in suitable framework in more compact form than that shown.
