22,632. Engelmann, M. Oct. 20. Spark arresters and extinguishers. -Instead of sparks being stored in the bottom of the smoke-box or in a device arranged in the chimney of a locomotive or other engine, the are retained o n 1 y a sufficient time for them to be broken by friction against sieve-like parts and to be cooled by the steam, and are then ejected into the air by later exhaust steam. Fig. 1 shows the arrester fitted to a locomotive chimney. A lower conical part d, with perforations to allow only small sparks to pass through, is supported by bars b screwed at c to the chimney. Above this conical part is a perforated pear- or bell-shaped hollow part e, with a central conical part f, also preferably perforated, supported by short bars g so as to allow broken sparks to pass through the opening k between its lower edge and the outer surface of the conical part d. The sparks are first thrown against the parts d, f, the smaller ones passing through the perforations, and are then carried, as shown by the arrows, through the opening k and against the outer surface of the upper portion of the body d, this portion being preferably not perforated. The sparks are thus broken and cooled in their passage by contact with the steam, and are then ejected into the air by a succeeding blast. The connections of the bars b, g with the parts d, e respectively may be made loose, by providing longer rivets, and by this means larger sparks held fast in the opening k are broken by the shaking motion, and are enabled to pass through.
