Embossing and stamping; riveting.-Documents, envelopes, newspapers, and the like are sealed or fastened together by means of rivets made of a soft metal such as lead and its alloys, so that the seal or fastening cannot be removed or replaced without detection. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show a rivet constructed of sheet lead, while Fig. 4 shows one formed from shot or lead wire. The rivet, Fig. 1, is first shaped as shown in Fig. 2 and then finally as in Fig. 3. The shank b is in any case made hollow for a portion of its length, so that, by means of a suitable die press or stamp, the shank is expanded into the form shown in Fig. 9, in order to grip the documents &c. When the invention is applied to newspaper punches, presses, &c. of well known make, it may be combined with the folding-machine so that the rivets are formed and arranged automatically. In order that the seal may be removed, a curved row of perforations may enclose the corner, where each seal is preferably placed. Either side of the rivet may be impressed with letters &c., during the stamping operation. When used for ordinary purposes, the rivets may be closed by a die press in which the die and a punch for perforating the documents are attached to a depressible block. Other forms of punches and presses may be used.
