18,167. Mitchell, R. J. C. Sept. 8. Compound fabrics.-Several layers of solid felt are thoroughly saturated under pressure with a solution of india-rubber. Two or more such layers of suitable width are cemented together with indiarubber or other suitable cement, and the combined strip is passed under pressure between grooved rollers to give it the necessary form for a wheel tyre. Lengths of these strips suitable to form a complete tyre are vulcanized in any suitable way. Screwed holes are tapped through the outside layers and half-way through the innermost layer, and metal screws with projecting heads, which strengthen the tyre and prevent slipping, are fixed in the holes. Felt made from the finest lambs' wool or fur is preferred for the outer layers of the tyre.
