Scrubbers and Washers.-Producer, blast-furnace, combustion, and other gases are freed from dust &c. held in suspension by first intimately mixing steam with the gases, by means of an atomizing-fan, then rapidly condensing the steam, and finally washing the gases. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, hot or cold water, or steam, according to the temperature of the gases, is supplied to them by a nozzle D, the steam produced or supplied being intimately mixed with the gases by the fan A. Cold water is supplied by the nozzle E to condense the steam, which enables the fan B to act as an effective washer. In a modification, a second steam-condensing nozzle and washing-fan are provided in series with the first. Multi - bladed fans with large annular intake chambers within the ring of blades are preferably employed.
