In order to obtain a constant leverage in the operation of locking-bars, the operating-rod is not connected directly with the locking-bar, as is usual, but to a device which ensures that the point of application of the force remains constant throughout the movement. Fig. 1 shows, by way of example, one method of carrying this into effect. A toothed quadrant d is fixed to one or more of the shafts e, to which the locking-bar is secured, and is operated by a rack h connected to the operating-lever.
