New or Improved Method of and Loom Apparatus for Finding and Cutting Unbound Portions or Loops of Weft Formed at the Selvage Edges of Certain Woven Fabrics.

Looms combined with fabric-finishing apparatus; weft, cutting.-In looms for weaving fabrics with large checks or like patterns with various wefts, apparatus is provided for removing the loose loops of weft which are formed at the selvedges between two stripes of the same weft. A sliding bar 3 is supported at the rear of the breast beam 1, and is reciprocated endways by a radius arm 31, pivotally connected to the bar and to a bracket on the lay, or by other suitable means. Mounted on the bar 3 are two spring jaws 5, 6, which pass respectively over and under the fabric 2 as the bar 3 moves towards the centre of the loom. A spring arm 7 is secured to the jaw 5, and has a cam-portion 71 and a cutting-edge 711. A bracket 9 is adjustably secured to a slotted bar on the breast beam, and has two projecting lugs 10,11. As the jaws 5, 6 are withdrawn from the fabric, the lug 11 engages a cam-block 12, which is pivotally attached to a block 61 on the jaw 6, and the jaw 6 is raised, so that any projecting loop of weft is caught between the block 61 and the jaw 5. The lug 10 then acts upon the cam-surface 71, and the edge 7" of the arm 7 is depressed through a hole 51 in the jaw 5, and co-operates with the block 61 to cut the end of weft. To assist the jaws in seizing the projecting loop of weft, a wire feeler 13 in employed, which comes against the underside of the fabric as the jaws move outwards, and on reaching the edge of the fabric passes up between the edge and the loop of weft, drawing the loop slightly outwards. Any other form of cutter may be employed, and may be actuated like scissors or with an angular or circular movement, and the jaws may otherwise be actuated by means of cam-slots. A similar device is placed at the other end of the breast beam, one bar 3 serving to operate both devices.
