18,252. Smith, P., and Shackleton, s. Sept. 9. Balling-machines for balling slivers for Noble's combs. On completion of the ball, the spindle is withdrawn, and the binding-plate moved laterally, automatically, to allow the ball to fall into a receiver, the parts being then returned to their original position. The square spindle 1, Figs. 2 and 4, is provided with a cylindrical extension 2 having a feather-key 10 engaging a keyway in the boss of the binding-plate, 8, which is driven through wheels g, h from a pulley 5 keyed to the shaft f1. A block b, secured at the end of the extension so as to permit of its rotation, is linked to a toothed crank .disk d engaged by a worm e on a shaft f carrying a fast pulley 6 and a loose pulley 7. A shaft l carries a pressing-plate m, bearing against the ball, and a quadrant n against which a brake block carried by a weighted lever bears. As the ball is formed, it presses back the plate against the frictional resistance, and when it is completed, an arm k on the shaft l has raised a rod j sufficiently to disengage a notch in the strap-fork bar 13 from its support, a weighted lever v then moving the bar to carry the belt from the pulley 5 on to the pulleys 6, 7. In this movement, a pivoted catch 25 on the bar acts against an arm t on a spindle 23, causing an arm s on this spindle to disengage a spring plunger q from the disk d, which is then rotated from the pulley 6 so as to withdraw the spindle 1 from the ball, and, when the key 10 comes against a fixed key 12 on the binding-plate sleeve, draw back the binding-plate 8 to release the ball. The arm t escapes from the catch 25 and returns to its original position, and the continued rotation of the disk d returns the plate and spindle, and is arrested after a complete revolution by the plunger q again engaging the disk. The belt then slips on the pulley 6 until the lever v is pulled over to wind the next ball. In a modification, the arm t and pawl 25 are dispensed with, and a hand-lever to is provided on the spindle 23 for withdrawing the plunger q. In this case, two diametrically opposite notches are formed in the disk so that the lever must be operated once to effect the withdrawal of the spindle and again to effect its return.
