Piles.-Relates to sheet piling for coffer-dams, sea-walls, and other submarine structures, also applicable to foundations, wells and shitfts, tunnelling, shoring trenches, and to ships' plates and bulkheads. The piling-sheet has male and female dovetails on the opposite edges, the former being the smaller so as to leave a vacant space on connecting up, which may be filled. with oakum, iron-rust cement, &c. The upper ends of the piles may be joined together by channel or other beams, and the wall of piling may be backed with stone or the like.
